Herb was my best friend’s father-in-law. He always called me “Sig Nu” and I called him “Delt”. He had a great wit, a big heart and a deep, deep faith! Most of all, he had an incredible love for his family, especially his grandchildren. Nothing made him prouder than ANYTHING that they did! Boy, do they ever have an angel in their corner now!

He also had a great sense of humor. This one’s for you, Herb, and this one’s for your horse! (sorry, you had to be there!) We’re all going to miss you, buddy!

    2. Jimmy says:

Thanks for the kind words…and yes Herb will be in the kids corner. And yes i was there and remember the “horse”…..

As we grow older the term “passing of an era” takes on more meaning. Herb’s life truly had great impact on many of our lives. For me he was one of two men who had the greatest influence on my life. He embodied the attributes of Honor, Duty and Loyalty. He never compromised his principles, but was first and foremost fair and understanding. Instead of ridiculing them he used our mistakes as teaching tools. From the football field, to the classroom, to the boardroom, he was a great leader who credited the accomplishments achieved to his players, students, and school leaders.
There are too many stories and anecdotes to tell, but I will always remember the game with Oak Harbor. We were behind toward the end of the game and had the ball. He Told Davey (Dave Swartz) our quarterback not to throw the ball. Of course he did and it ws intercepted. With head hanging down Dave trotted to the sidelines only to be confronted by the “Old Coach”. “Damnit Dave, I thought I told you not to throw it?” “Oh, that’s allright, we’ll get the ball back. ” He knew Dave was in the depths of depression and wasn’t going to blame any loss on poor old Dave. By the way, Lutz Krotzer left and did not see the spectacuclar 27 Double Reverse Pass that won the game for us on the last play of the game. Herb was a great and gacious man and he will be sorely missed by all of us who loved him.

    6. Lance Sydnor says:

Rest in peace Great Uncle Herb you will be missed.

    7. Barb Leid-Aldrich says:

I will miss Mr. Redding at our class reunions- He always livened things up and had a memory that couldn’t be matched!! He will be truly missed by the citizens of Gibsonburg and all the former students. It was a privilege to know him. Barb GHS Class of ’73.

    8. Barbara Kirwen Dudley says:

Herb was such an important influence in my life. He helped me decide to become a nurse and I will be forever grateful. Whenever I ran into him on a return to Gibsonburg, he always had a big smile. He loved to tell me about his grandchildren. I think he was one in a million. One of those rare people we are blessed to meet. We were lucky he was a part of our lives. He lived a good life.

    9. Gene Diab says:

When I was a kid in school, Herb Redding was everything. He was the science teacher down the hall, he was the Principal, he was the football coach. Our school days were filled with his personality and his example. Later, after I grew up and started teaching at a high school, he was the model I looked for in the teachers around me. And finally, after I left the country and looked back on those years, Herb grew even more important. He seemed to represent the best of Gibsonburg itself and a whole generation of Americans: imaginative, hard-working, good-humored, responsible, fair. Selfless. Few can have lived a life so full and so useful to their community. Who can ever forget his great smile?

    10. Phil Haubert says:

We held our 45th reunion of the class of 1965 last Saturday. There was an empty seat
and a noticeable void in the program because Coach Herb Redding didn’t show up. He
took great pride in attending as many class reunions as possible. Coach Rick Wonderly reminded us that we had a great bull session with Herb and his former players at his last class reunion. Our deeds and records just keep getting better with each retelling.
Coach Redding, you will be missed.

    11. Angie Cushing says:

My deepest condolences to Mary, Marcia, & Family. Mr. Herb Redding was my principal at St. Mary’s in Millersville, and my teacher in grades 7 & 8, 1985-86. I attribute my Math, Writing, and Speaking skills, as well as an appreciation for the Catholic faith to him. He was a good teacher and a great mentor. I also graduated from GHS in 1990 and we just celebrated our 20 year class reunion. He was honored at the Football Game on Oct. 22nd. We all spoke highly of him, and reminisced about past experiences with him. He will be truly missed. I love the website, as it is a great tribute to his long legacy. I am sure he’ll be watching all of us from above. God Bless your entire family!

    12. Kim and Carol Morelock says:

Kim said that when the funeral was late showing up to the Church, he had to chuckle. He said a while back he was with the honor guard at a funeral and when they arrived at the Church, Herb was standing outside waiting. He said to Kim, “where the hell have you been!”. He was a good friend and neighbor. When our boys were teens, he would wait outside after sports practice or school and question them as they went by. He was always interested in everything that went on. We were so pleased that they honored him with the school naming while he was still able to enjoy it. He deserved this more than anyone I have ever met. Kim and I are truly sorry for your loss.

    13. Lilley Decker says:

My condolences to you and your family. I had the honor of meeting Mr. Redding while I was a lifeguard at the YMCA during high school…many many years ago. He would come into the pool to go swimming. I learned from the start that this man loved to talk to everyone. Of course in talking with him I understood why. Turned out that he was the principle where my parents had once gone to school. We introduced ourselves and I met a new friend at the Y. I always anticipated a 10-15 min. conversation with him after every swim. At first, he would always call me “Lucy” I would have to correct him everytime. I thought, a man who could remember students from long times passed, sure couldn’t remember anymore. Until I realized he was playing with me. I was kinda shy back then. Being a young person, he never treated me as such. Always kind and courteous. And I will always remember that. He will be missed but I will always remember the man who knew me as “Lucy”. My prayers are with you. God Bless ~Lilley Decker

    14. Shirley Baker says:

Dear Mary and Family So sorry to hear of Herbs passing..Gibsonburg and many others will miss a wonderful man..When ever I would see him in the Bakery he would always ask about our class of 1961.. He remembered every one..May you hold all your memories close to you.. god Bless each of you..

    15. JEAN Richard says:

I have many great memories of Herb. He was one of my favorite people. Best wishes to Mary and family. Jean and Walden Richard and family

    16. Karen (Lohrbach) Botzko says:

Mary, Marcia, and Family. Herb was a very unique person. He was my 8th grade orientation teacher, my HS Principal and my Superintendent. When I was Treasurer at Lakota Schools, he was the Principal at St. Mary’s and we met again. Herb came to our Class of 1964 45th reunion last fall. He always remembered his students and could share some fun stories about school. I am sorry to hear of his passing. He will be missed! He was a great friend and a great educator.

    17. Kathie Falor Crandall says:

Marcia & Mrs. Redding It was a pleasure to have worked for Mr. Redding. I was a 21 year old when he hired me in 1971 to be a business education teacher at the high school. I was very young at the time and he gave me a chance. I eventually moved on to another district. A few years ago some other teachers and myself put together a little reunion for the teachers that had taught at Gibsonburg during the 70s and Mr. Redding honored us by attending. Although it had been over 25 years years he recognized me immediately. I am so sorry for your loss and so appreciative that I had a chnce to work for him.

    18. Les & Florence Bechtel says:

Mary, Marcia & Family, Our sincere sympathy to you and your family at this very difficult time. What a remarkable person he was and always remembered you and all people in our family and always asked about them. He was amazing in remembering people and names. We are sharing in your sorrow and may these thoughts of care and concern help bring some comfort in the days ahead. R.I.P. Herb.

    19. Dwight Damschroder says:

Thank you for sharing Herb with us! He may not have been a saint but he was definately a great person who made others better and made Gibsonburg a better place as well. Of my own memories I cannot ever remember him without a smile on his face. To me he was the heart of the school and the town!

    20. John Foisy says:

My Prayers and deepest condolences to all of your family, Mary. Forty-one years ago we reunited after not seeing each other for seventeen years. We shared so many good conversations since then. Our last call, late this summer, as only he could do, he suggested we go to the “Islands” and have some fun. Yes, I knew what he meant! May God Bless Us All. as we grieve his passing. John Foisy

    21. Carol Stump Szana says:

Mary, Marcia and family. I want to extend my deepest sympathy. Mr.Redding was not only my teacher, but also my neighbor. My fondest memories are having a knock on the door while I was practicing my piano and Herb would say “my turn” and come in and make that piano sing. He was a great man and he will be missed by many.

    22. Myron And Patricia Zajkowski says:

Our condolences to the Redding family. I first met Herb Redding at Lorain St Mary’s where he was my coach and my teacher. Periodically we rekindled our friendship at our class reunions. Herb had a major influence on all those he touched through his guidance and as a model for caring behavior. He will be missed. My God grant him everlasting peace.

    25. Father Richard Wurzel says:

As a Fremonter, I had heard the name Herb Redding. He also was a classmate of my sister, Jeanne (Wurzel)Heyman. But I came to know Herb when I was pastor of St. Thomas More Parish in Bowling Green and he was a student. He often came to daily Mass, sometimes served for me, always stayed to chat, have a good word, ask about my sister and my brother,Jack. Herb was a very spiritual, positive, happy, upbeat person who touched many, many lives. He was an excellent role model for the young people he coached, taught, and administered as principal and superintendent. His was a very good life. God bless him. Although it was his time, I’m sure you all will miss him a lot. And God bless you too.

Mrs. Redding and family, may God truly bless you with His peace and presence during this time of loss. I’ve never forgotten, nor will I, the man I truly respect. After realizing I couldn’t be part of the football team on the field, Coach Redding made me part of the team by having me film the games atop the press box. Mary, Marcia, Jim and family, Our deepest sympathy in the loss of your husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather. There is no one I know that had more passion and commitment to education, high school sports, or kids in general. He dedicated his life and career to his passion and so many young people benefited from his passion and love. The last time we were in Gibsonburg we saw Herb in the bakery and we chatted. His love and pride for his family, and especially all of his lovely grandchildren, were absolutely apparent. He talked about all of you with such pride and love. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all the way from England. May God’s always present love and grace provide the peace you all need at this time of great loss. 35. Richard Freeborn says:

Mary, Marsha and family. In this time of mourning, you can take comfort in the fact that Coach Redding had such a positive influence on so many lives in all of Northwest Ohio. His influence reached far beyond the football field. The principles he passed on to all his pupils stand as the real worth of his time on earth. In the past two days, I haven’t met anyone who did not mention some act of kindness or a citizenship trait that Coach Redding instilled in them over the years. I think Carole (Landis) Kirsch said it best when she told me, “We all lost a good friend.” I know he was a mentor to me long after my playing days were over. He was always interested in what we (“his players”) were doing and would always have sage advice for us as we tackled life’s challenges. The ideals of fair play and become a good citizen who takes pride in their community that he instilled in all of us will be his legacy for generations to come.

    36. Tina (Picciuto) Santiago says:

Dear Redding Family: You have my deepest condolences. Mr. Redding was a remarkable man with a great sense of humor and a great knack for telling stories. We’ve missed seeing him in church this past year. He always shook my hand at the sign of peace and said “Peace Cuz”. We’re related through the Wasserman’s. He will truly be missed by all. ~The Santiago Family

    37. Jeff & Barb (Leid) Aldrich says:

Dear Mrs. Redding, Marsha and family, Please accept our sincerest sympathies. Gibsonburg has lost a true icon and society a great man-leader-educator. I always enjoyed talking with him when I would see him around town. May all the happy memories you created together help you through these sorrowful times. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

    38. Roger Freeborn says:

Dick told me today. Some would say another chapter comes to an end for Gibsonburg and the Golden Bear Family with the passing of Coach Redding who was a mentor to so many of us. I would say that his spirit is alive and well in the hearts of so many of us who were fortunate to have the chance to be coached up by such a great leader of young men. We are better husbands and fathers for it. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mary, Marsha and the family. May peace be with you all.
