Herb Redding passed away around 8:45PM on October 20th, 2010.

We will have a full biography commemorating his life for all of his students, athletes, co-workers, fellow churchgoers, and friends shortly but, until then, we are posting an e-mail that his grandson (Marcia’s son), Chris Sanders, sent to a priest in Savannah, GA that knew Herb…

“As much as this has really broken me up- I’ve been taught that everything happens for a reason and that the Lord works in mysterious ways…I witnessed that last night.  My dad and I had a conversation around 6 o’clock about how he was doing very well mentally/psychologically, but we just weren’t sure how long he could keep going on physically. I called him (like I do 2-3x a week) to see how he was doing around 8PM.  We could only talk for about 2 minutes, but I got off the phone somehow thinking it was the last time I would ever talk to him.  I called my mom and told her I wanted to book a plane flight for the weekend because I was worried (again, there was no real bad warning signs before this..i just had a feeling).  She immediately went to the hospital and he passed away towards the end of their conversation.

If I hadn’t made that phone call , received that message from above, and talked to my mom- she wouldn’t have had that last minute opportunity to be there with him- one last time.

The only way I know to end this message is to end it the same way he would end any letter-

May the road rise to meet you,

May the wind be always at your back,

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

And rains fall soft upon your fields.

    And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

    I appreciate your prayers.”
